The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs was formed by members and friends of the UU congregations of Glens Falls, Albany, and Schenectady who lived in Saratoga Springs and dreamed of having a congregation in their own home town. With the support of the New Congregation Ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Association, a committee of six began to meet with Rev. Linda Hoddy in May 1996 to explore the possibility of starting a new UU congregation in Saratoga Springs.
A series of committee and public meetings led to our first service in the Community Room of the Saratoga Springs Library just before Thanksgiving 1996, with regular monthly services beginning in January 1997 at the United Methodist church.
Weekly Sunday evening services began the following September in the sanctuary of Temple Sinai, where we held our charter service in March 1998. In September 1999 we moved to Wilson Chapel on the campus of Skidmore College, where we could hold our services on Sunday mornings.
By the spring of 2001, our membership had grown to the extent that we began to look for a home of our own. A series of fortuitous events, some wonderfully good timing, and the outstanding generosity of our members and friends allowed us to purchase our present home in November 2001, a building that had been previously owned by the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
